Lessons from Ed Calderon’s Course & the Real-World Need for Escape Skills

This past weekend, I attended a Counter Custody course with Ed Calderon—one of the most respected voices in non-permissive environment training. His material is gritty, tested, and refreshingly honest. But the biggest takeaway wasn’t just about defeating zip ties or handcuff shims—it was this:

Every family should have a plan for the worst-case scenario—because the predators do.

You don’t need to be involved in “high-risk” work to benefit from counter-custody training. If you are a parent, spouse, or protector, you are already at higher risk than you think.

Let’s talk about why this matters.

The Problem Most People Don’t Want to Think About

Modern society creates an illusion of safety. But as we've seen in real-world cases—from cartel violence to random abductions to human trafficking—bad people do bad things, even in “safe” neighborhoods.

Criminals and opportunists are evolving. They use restraints, vehicles, blindfolds, and remote stash houses to delay discovery and isolate their victims. By the time help is even alerted, it may be too late.

What is Counter-Custody Training?

Counter-custody training teaches you how to:

  • Escape handcuffs (metal, zip tie, or improvised)
  • Defeat common restraints
  • Conceal and use tools like shims or friction saws
  • Move under stress, blindfolded, or in confined spaces
  • Manage your fear response under real pressure

It’s not about becoming Jason Bourne—it’s about not being helpless.

Why Families Should Care

You don’t need to be a spy or special forces to get targeted. In fact, families are the softest target.

Here’s why this matters for you and your kids:

Abductions Aren’t Just a “News Thing”

Child and adult abductions happen every day—many involving someone the victim already knows. Whether it’s an attempted custody grab, trafficking attempt, or random carjacking, the first 30 minutes matter most.

Your Family is Worth Preparing For

Just like you’d teach your child how to swim, cross the street, or call 911, you can also teach them:

  • How to stay calm if taken
  • How to find escape points
  • How to access or use basic tools
  • How to fight smart if escape fails

These Skills Stack with What We Already Teach

At Sentinel Combatives, our self-defense, Krav Maga, and situational awareness programs are already rooted in realistic survival. Counter-custody skills are a natural extension of what we do:

  • Movement under duress
  • Escaping grabs, holds, and restraints
  • Improvised tools and non-permissive mindset
  • Family protection planning and rehearsals

Real Tools. Real Skills. Real Empowerment.

From Ed’s course, one message was clear: you are your own rescue plan.

Having a hidden handcuff key or learning to saw through a zip tie may sound extreme—until you're thrown in the back of a vehicle and realize that nobody knows where you are.

That’s not paranoia. That’s preparation.

How to Get Started (Even as a Family)

Start the Conversation
Don’t scare your kids. Use age-appropriate language. Let them know: “If you ever get taken, your job is to get out and come home.”

Build Escape Kits Together

Hidden handcuff keys

Friction saw (Kevlar cord)

Bypass tools

Concealment methods (shoelaces, belt liners, hair clips)

Rehearse the Mental Game
Practice staying calm, looking for exits, and staying aware of surroundings.
